The CMS Violin Shop

The CMS Violin Shop is a closed shop that supports the violin and viola programs at CMS. We can provide and support fractional and full size violins as well as violas in most common sizes.  All revenues come to CMS and are directly related to product as participation in the various aspects of the program by Ken Burgess and CMS staff members are donated.  The shop is located offsite due to space constraints.

CMS has been fortunate to attract the continued support and training of several professionals including master violinmaker and luthier Ute Brinkmann, http://www.luthier-ct.com.  Ute learned her trade in Germany and then at       W. E. Hills & Sons in London, where she routinely worked on some of the finest instruments in the world.

CMS is also supported by the famous string acoustician and string builder Carleen Maley Hutchins, http://www.newviolinfamily.org/cmh/cmh-luthier.html, whose musical experiences are a Who’s Who of the string world.  Carleen assisted in the selection of instruments for the school and provides research information used in the set-ups and continued improvement of the instruments.  Both Carleen and Ute continue to field questions and offer opinions and solutions to any special problems encountered.  CMS students are indeed indebted to their continuing support.

Products

We currently stock ¼ through 4/4 violins in two categories, used and new.  All violins are set up in our shop using strings sets that maximize the player’s desires and the violin’s nature.  Set-up is done for both fiddling and classical style.  Violas are special ordered (due to the many sizes and models) and are also set up at the shop.  Students wishing to trade in instruments towards purchases may do so.

Repairs

The shop supports and repairs all violins and violas sold by the shop including bows and cases.  In addition to the traditional repairs such as sound post resetting, sticky pegs, and so forth, electronic acoustical balancing (known as mode tuning) http://www.newviolinfamily.org/cmh/cmh-modetuning.html,  is now available at the shop and is listed in the new price schedule for 2008.

Instruments can be dropped off at CMS where they are taken to the shop and returned upon completion.
