junior string orchestra

The opportunity to play in a group is an important part of music instruction and a valuable supplement to private lessons. Ensembles meet weekly, working on repertoire for community performances.  Instrumentalists are welcome to join our ensembles whether or not they are also taking private lessons at Community Music School.

The Junior String Orchestra is a wonderful “first orchestra” for string players (ages approximately 7-12, although there are exceptions) that will open up a new world of ensemble playing while reinforcing technique and reading skills.  It is open to children who have had a year or two of violin, viola or cello lessons who are comfortable reading music and playing in the keys of A, D, C and G.  The orchestra is directed by Martha Herrle, whose warm and welcoming style puts everyone at ease.  She chooses “fun” music and focuses on creating a very positive ensemble experience for the children.

Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings at Old Saybrook High School.  The orchestra begins in September and works towards one big concert during the first week of April each year.
