Fall 2010 classes are categorized by age group. Please note those groups with time TBD (may be different from printed brochure). Class times will be determined based upon enrollees' schedules.
Groups for Preschool and Kindergarten
KINDERMUSIK® A good beginning never ends.
Village with Nancy Thomas
Ages 6-18 months, with adult
Tuesdays: 9-9:40 am 8 weeks beginning Sept. 14 $123
Village classes engage your baby with an array of sounds, images, tactile and movement experiences. At home materials include CD, story book, a musical instrument, home journal and carry bag.
Our Time with Nancy Thomas
Ages 18 months-3 years, with adult
45 minute session; Choose Tues at 10 am; Tues at 10:45 am; or Weds at 10 am; 16 weeks beginning Sept. 14 $228
Children are introduced to singing, chanting, moving, listening and playing simple instruments. Language skills are fostered with songs, sound imitation and vocal play, while creative dancing affirms a child’s urge to keep moving. At home materials include CD, story book, musical instrument and carry case.
Imagine That with Nancy Thomas
Ages 3-4, without adult
Wednesdays: 10:45-11:30 am 16 weeks beginning Sept. 15 $238
A wide variety of musical subjects and hands-on projects are introduced through singing, listening, moving and exploring. At home materials include CD, songbook, activity cards and backpack.
Young Child with Nancy Thomas
Ages 4-5, without adult
Thursdays: 1–2 pm 16 weeks beginning Sept. 16 $299
Broaden your child’s musical experience and understanding in classes that introduce reading and writing music and playing a variety of simple instruments, all with an emphasis on enjoyment! Glockenspiel, game bag, songbook, CD, and carry bag included.

Keyboard Duet with Nancy Thomas
For the Kindergarten student & parent/caregiver

An introduction to the piano for kindergarten-age children and their caregiver. Children will learn basic piano skills and beginning note reading in a fun and happy group setting.
Beginning Piano with Joni Gage

Beginning Piano with Adele Huffman
Grades 2 and 3
Wednesdays: 5:30-6:15 pm 16 weeks beginning Sept. 15 $325
A weekly 45 minute group class that will get your child off to a great start using the Alfred Piano Course and incorporating a variety of engaging group activities and games.
Introduction to Singing with Shari Wilcox
Grades 1-5
Thursdays: 3:45-4:30 pm 16 weeks beginning Sept. 16 $325
For boys and girls who love to sing. It is important to get a good start with proper technique. We will concentrate on solo work in a group setting.
Beginning Cello with Christine Coyle

Music Makers I with Amy Hemenway
Grades K-3

Using a variety of engaging activities and games, we’ll have fun exploring different ways to make music, using the piano, guitars, singing and rhythm instruments. We’ll make our own instruments as well!
Introduction to the Guitar with Amy Hemenway
Grades 2-3
Wednesdays: 5-5:30 pm 16 weeks beginning Sept. 15 $325
Beginning guitar techniques for young children, including basic music notation and fundamentals. You will need to provide an appropriate instrument - most likely, a half-size guitar with nylon strings (not a toy). Expect to practice daily.
Groups for Youth and Teens
Digital Piano Workshop with Tom Briggs
Ages 8-13
Mondays: 3:45-4:30 pm 14 weeks beginning Sept. 13 $285
A digital keyboard class based on ensemble performance. Musical arrangements cover many styles from classical to jazz to popular music. This is a great way to reinforce note reading and an understanding of clefs and rhythms while exploring the digital sounds on the Yamaha pianos. Prerequisite: One year of private piano instruction and the ability to read treble and bass clef and have a general understanding of notation, reading and rhythm.
Cantabella Choir at CMS with Joni Gage
Ages 8-14

Hold onto your hat! This energetic performance-oriented choir will hook your kids on singing. We’ll choose dramatic, amusing and often choreographed pieces that boys and girls will love to perform!
Vocal Performance with Shari Wilcox
Grades 7-12
Thursdays: 6:45-7:30 pm 16 weeks beginning Sept. 16 $325
Focus on solo performance and skills needed for successful auditions and competitions including all-state chorus, regional chorus, musicals, and more! All voice parts.

Beginning Piano with Marilyn Lazare

Cabaret Singers with Karli Gilbertson

Our Artist in Residence will coax your inner performer to come out into the spotlight! We’ll work on solos and duets in a relaxed atmosphere, concentrating on projection, breathing and sound placement to help you shine. All styles and voice parts encouraged to join this upbeat group class.
Beginning Violin with Martha Herrle

New Horizons Beginners with Patricia Hurley
Tuesdays 9-10:45 am & Thursdays 10-10:45 am 16 weeks beginning Sept. 14 $395**
The New Horizons Band of the Connecticut Valley-Shore started last fall. This program allows adults to play an instrument and to participate in the joy of learning and performing with an ensemble. Come join the fun! Informational sessions to try out instruments will be held at CMS and other community locations. Like instrument sectionals on Tuesdays followed by a band rehearsal; band rehearsal only on Thursday.

New Horizons Intermediate Band with Patricia Hurley
Tuesdays and Thursdays 11-11:45 am 16 weeks beginning Sept. 14 $250**
An extension of the New Horizons beginning band, the Intermediate Band is a performing ensemble for adults who completed the New Horizons Beginners program and adults with some prior instrumental experience on band instruments. Band rehearsals are twice a week with performances scheduled during the semester. Standard band literature graded level 1-2 in all styles and genres will be performed.
New Horizons Musicianship Class I with Patricia Hurley
Thursdays 9:15-10 am 8 weeks beginning Sept. 16 $160**
The musicianship class will cover topics of music theory related to the band curriculum, including note reading and note values, time signatures, rhythm and meter, dynamics, articulation, accidentals and intervals. Each session will also include ear training. Subsequent sessions upon request.
Recorder Instructional Ensemble with Bruce Larkin
Thursdays: time TBD (45 minutes) 8 weeks beginning Sept. 16 $160
If you don’t play the recorder yet, this class is a great way to get started on an instrument that provides instant gratification and only a small investment (about $35). With practice, you will soon conquer the fingering patterns and note reading, and make music in no time!
