community music school
Centerbrook (Essex), Connecticut
Community Music School has
provided outstanding voice and instrumental instruction to adults and
children since 1983.
Our professional faculty and staff and their strong commitment to excellence
makes the Community Music School a very special place indeed. Operated on a
non-profit basis, we offer a wide range of opportunities for each student to
learn and express a love of music at affordable rates and convenient times
throughout the year.
Each week, students from more than 20 area towns join us for music classes
and private lessons. A typical student might be a seventh-grader from Old
Saybrook studying
clarinet or a high school junior from Killingworth learning electric guitar taking a 1/2-hour
lesson weekly. There are many others, though – preschoolers in our Kindermusik® program, adults of all ages,
Suzuki students, young people with special needs,
and professional musicians.
Community Music School has its roots in a pilot program sponsored by the
Deep River Park & Recreation Commission during the summer of 1980. The
school’s founder was Patricia Hurley, a teacher in Regional School
District #4 who recognized the need for expanded musical opportunities in
the area to supplement programs in the local schools. The school was founded
as an independent entity in September 1983, and the first classes were
taught at the Essex Town Hall. Enrollment continued to grow, and after
using temporary facilities in Centerbrook for a few years, the school found
a home at Spencer’s Corner in 1989.
Our facilities have been expanded over the years, and we now have 16 studios
that are used for private or group instruction and ensemble classes. Our
faculty numbers 36, and we are currently serving over 600 students,
both children and adults.
