Clarinet, Saxophone, New Horizons Band
Andy Sherwood holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Ohio State University and a Master of Music from the University of Connecticut. He has studied improvisation with renowned jazz clarinetist Eddie Daniels and saxophonist Walt Weiskopf. Andy taught at Community Music School in 2005 and 2006, and has also been a clarinet and saxophone instructor at Thames Valley Music School
Andy has a wide range of experience as a performer, especially during his 25 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Band. He performed as clarinetist and saxophonist in multiple ensembles with the Coast Guard Band including the concert band, Dixieland jazz band, saxophone quartet, swing band and big band. He performed as Benny Goodman soloist on hundreds of performances on tours across the United States, Russia and England. He led the Coast Guard Dixieland band for 15 years, which included performances at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage and traditional jazz festivals in Sacramento, Sun Valley and Connecticut. As part of the Coast Guard Band outreach program he coached public school students in jazz improvisation.
Andy also performed on classical tenor saxophone on band tours and on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He has released three recordings with his Dixieland Jazz Quartet: “While We Danced at the Mardi Gras,” “Dixieland Clarinet Live” and “Dixieland Downtown.” He continues to perform locally and throughout the state with the Andy Sherwood Jazz Quartet.
