violin shop

Violin ShopThe CMS Violin Shop is a closed shop (for CMS students only) that supports the violin and viola programs at CMS. We can provide and support fractional and full size violins as well as violas in most common sizes.  All revenues are used to purchase supplies for refurbishing donated instruments for our students.

The shop is run by volunteer Ken Burgess, who studied with a number of luthiers including the famous string acoustician and stringed instrument builder Carleen Maley Hutchins, whose musical experiences are a Who’s Who of the string world. Carleen assisted in the selection of instruments for the school and provides research information used in the set-ups and continued improvement of the instruments.

We currently stock 1/4 through 4/4-sized violins in two categories, used and new.  All violins are set up in our shop using strings sets that maximize the player’s desires and the violins’ nature.  Set-up is done for both fiddling and classical style.  Violas are special ordered (due to the many sizes and models) and are also set up at the shop.

The shop supports and repairs all violins and violas sold by the shop including bows and cases.  In addition to the traditional repairs such as sound post resetting, sticky pegs, and so forth, electronic acoustical balancing (known as mode tuning), is now available at the shop.   Violin Shop

Instruments can be dropped off at CMS where they are taken to the shop and returned upon completion.  Contact Ken Burgess (keburgess@snet.net) with any questions.

We sell instruments, but do not rent them.
